Forest lands rezoning ‘done deal’?

Dear Editor,

The enthusiasm of the Gabriola Health Care Society (GHCS) for building a medical clinic on land donated by Dr. Bob Rooks is perfectly understandable; yet, I wonder if I am alone in being increasingly irritated by assertions by GHCS members to the effect that the rezoning of this land is a foregone conclusion and merely a formality.

I would have thought that the exchange of forest land for a building, road, and car park, no matter how laudable the objective, would be something for the community and for the Islands Trust, with its mandate to “preserve and protect”, to seriously think about.

How long after such a rezoning can we expect application for the remainder of the land with those magnificent views over Lock Bay and the Strait of Georgia, to be up for grabs for residential or similar institutional development?
